When I first started World Energy company 11 years ago, I had very little knowledge
of the industry. Like most Americans, I knew gasoline powered my car, I knew
the lights were generated by electricity, and in theory I knew the various sources
from which this energy came.
But, as they say, the devil is in the details – and detail was what I lacked.
Furthermore, I was intrigued by the singularity of view that many of the various
participants in the industry had. Power guys were power guys, oil guys were
oil guys, service guys provided service and others circled the industry plugging
in where necessary. At least lawyers are always lawyers. I realized quickly
that World Energy would create a bridge, or perhaps a web, to link them all.
Over the last 11 years we have published editorials from each part of the
industry. We have had each of the major integrated oil companies represented
in the magazine. We have published views from the top utilities heads, the
pipeline company chiefs and the leaders of the wind and solar companies. I
have had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing many of these individuals,
and I’ve found that most are very concerned about how we ultimately “power
the planet” and are often confused by the lack of information assimilated by
the consumers of the energy they produce.
One of our regular contributing authors, Matt Simmons, calls it “two ships
passing in the night” – referring to the opinions of the industry’s leadership
and the lack of understanding by the general consumer, compounded by input
from the politicians, consultants, brokers and lawyers. And those ships are,
invariably, pushed farther apart by the media that covers all.
Throughout these years we have developed a following both within the industry
and outside it. Initially, our publication was developed to be a magazine written
by the industry for the industry; however with both our subject matter and
our audience rapidly diversifying, it is time to take on a broader mission.
Our products – this quarterly magazine, World Energy Monthly Review newsletter,
our Web site, our TV show and its subsequent streaming video – all have contributed
to World Energy becoming the voice of the industry. Now it is time to give
that voice a bigger speaker.
To this end, we are very pleased that the management of World Energy has expanded
to include Steve Huey and Eric Graves. Each has more than 25 years of branding
experience with companies like IBM, Compaq, Texaco and BFI. We have accepted
the challenge of connecting the leadership of the industry with the most important
stakeholder of all, the end user. Over the next few months we will be expanding
our cable channel presence, adding to our Web prowess with a new WorldEnergySource.com
and dramatically expanding the reach and scope of the magazine.
Over the last 11 years we have carried the words of the CEOs, presidents,
energy dignitaries and many other industry leaders. I hope we have gained your
trust. As we enter our 12th year we will be taking on our greatest challenge
ever: to build a bridge beyond the industry and reach out to those who really
need to know what we know, and to put a face on our industry beyond those of
J.R. Ewing, Enron and the Exxon Valdez. If we are truly going to power the
planet, we will not accomplish it as an industry isolated from the world but
rather in partnership with the rest of the population. Together I know we can
make a difference.
Our call to action is simple: Together we will broadcast the world of energy
on television, together we will cover the important issues in print and together
we will distribute the content. To learn more and become a part of the plan,

Richard R. Loomis is the founder of World Energy magazine, editor-in-chief
of World Energy Monthly Review, original designer of World Energy
Source, and producer of World Energy Television. He is responsible for creating
a network of more than 250 CEOs, presidents, chairmen, energy dignitaries and
consultants who write for his publications; overall design of the publications
and Web site; subscriptions; and representation
of the publication, now on
its 10th year of publishing. For World Energy Monthly Review he writes
feature editorials on topics ranging from politics to new technologies for
the industry. During his career, he has interviewed more than 500 CEOs serving
the energy industry.
Mr. Loomis began his career as a graphic assistant at Palisades Previews
in Los Angeles, where he learned to do spot illustration, spec type and prepare
art boards to be shot for film. He moved into the sales department at age 17
for Previews magazine
in the Malibu area. Mr. Loomis graduated from the University of the Pacific
with a bachelor's degree in business with an emphasis on marketing and graphic
design. While at the university, he started his first publication, Silhouette magazine,
and began an early career that included working on titles such as Ranch & Coast magazine, LA
West magazine, The Beach & Bay Press and The Beacon.
Other titles started by Mr. Loomis include Jump magazine, The
Dallas Business Review, The Houston Business Review, Energy
Houston, Energy
Oklahoma, Energy Australia and Energy Calgary.
Other affiliations include the honorary committee for the Offshore Energy
Center and the advisory committee of Bauer College’s Global Energy Management
Institute at the University of Houston.
