Energy Careers in Crisis?
Recruiting Tomorrow's Energy Generation

21 October 2003

Whenever the energy industry is in the public eye, it always seems to be for something negative which produces a bias against aspiring talent joining the industry. Yet, the need for energy is growing, especially green energy.

Unfortunately, the employee demographics suggest a brain drain is upon us; for example, the average age of the domestic oil & gas workforce is around 50 with projections that 40% will retire by the end of the decade. But job seekers see a mature industry that is part of the old smokestack industrial revolution steeped in traditional old fashion culture.

The huge technical and business challenges of meeting not only today's but future energy demand does not get messaged through to the youth. Leading energy companies forward, whether it is one of the super majors, a de-regulating utility, a virtual energy company, or something else, will require the best that universities can offer. Given this backdrop, the purpose of the symposium is to address this looming question of "energy careers in crisis?" and to discuss possible solutions through the role of education, government, and industry.
