Mandateless In Mexico Cover Story: August 2006

As we reported in "Mexico: An Ally in the Balance" (March 2006), in an ever-widening desert of Latin American left-leaning tendencies - culminating in the rise of nationalistic oil companies in Venezuela and Bolivia - Mexico has remained an oasis of capitalistic ideals as well as one of the staunchest allies of the United States. This seems unexpected for a country with a 100 percent state-owned oil industry and no ability for outside investment in those resources.

The age of oil is nearing a crossroad, and in the future our path can take two directions. Will the optimists prove correct? Are we really awash in oil, and the current high prices and speculation about supply merely reflect the “doomsday” crowd sowing doubt among us? Or do today's volatile conditions and uncertain supply portend a very real, very difficult tomorrow? Could a full-fledged energy crisis blow up in front of us and disintegrate the wall that represents the oil producing nations?
