Oil companies announce Gulf of Mexico deepwater drilling successes

On Oct. 29, California-based Chevron Corp. (NYSE: CVX) and other companies announced the successful appraisal of their Anchor discovery in the Lower Tertiary Wilcox Trend.

The discovery was announced in January, and appraisal drilling began in June. So far, a hydrocarbon column of at least 1,800 feet has been confirmed in the Lower Tertiary Wilcox reservoirs at Anchor.

Chevron subsidiary Chevron U.S.A. Inc. is the operator and holds a 55 percent working interest. Other co-owners are Houston-based Cobalt International Energy LP (NYSE: CIE) with 20 percent, Dallas- and Houston-based Venari Resources LLC with 12.5 percent and Samson Offshore Anchor LLC with 12.5 percent.

“The positive results of our appraisal work at Anchor indicate a significant discovery of potentially hub class scale,” Jay Johnson, executive vice president of upstream for Chevron, said in a statement. (by Olivia Pulsinelli, Houston Business Journal)
